Lite om landet

Innan vi går på valutan i landet så berättar jag lite övergripande om Brittiska Jungfruöarna.

Som kartan längre ner antyder så finns det både ett område som heter British Virgin Islands och ett annat område som heter US Virgin Islands och som lyder under amerikanskt styre.

Bara ca 20.000 människor bor på British Virgin Islands,  jämfört med ca 100.000  på den amerikanska delen. Invånarna på US Virgin Islands är amerikanska medborgare men de får inte rösta i det amerikanska presidentvalet. Istället röstar de om vilka som ska representera landet i USA:s kongress. Och om vilka som ska sitta i egna landets senat.

Egna mynt

Inte bara US dollar används på de brittiska Jungfruöarna. Sedan 1973 har det producerats egna mynt (ISO VGD) för , som det uttrycks: "lokalt användande och i par med US Dollarn". Så här beskrivs den första utgåvan:

"The government issued the first coins in honor of 300 years of constitutional government in the islands. US coins  and currency continue to be the primary medium of exchange, though the coinage of the BVI is legal tender."

Mynten tillverkas i tre kvalitéer:

Prooftekniken beskrivs så här av swedishcoins.net:

"Den speciella präglingstekniken med polerade myntämnen och blästrade, högpolerade stampar, varje mynt präglat flera gånger, stamparna ompoleras efter ett par slag".

Mynt i kvalité special uncirculated är som proofmynten, men saknar "frosted features", dvs matterade drag.

Det du ser här ovan är alltså ett 1 dollars proof mynt från -73. Jag har hela serien från 1973.  Sex mynt. Valörer 1 dollar, samt 1, 5, 10, 25 och 50 Cent. Läs om den serie jag talar om här nere. Franklin Mint

De tidiga mynten i landet är präglade av Franklin Mint, och om dessa säger den utmärkta webbplatsen www.coinsite.com så här (detta är alltså klippt från deras webbplats):

"Franklin Mint Products are often promotional issues. FM pays a fee for using the name of an official body, creates the designs with the permission of that  body, and then markets the medals as an official issue. They also mint medals for hire.

For example, The Franklin Mint made precious metal proof and regular issue coins, including a large, heavy 20 Balboa under the name of Panama. The only stipulation was that the "coins" have the regular official devices, such in the case of Panama, the Panama Shield or in the case of the British Virgin Islands, the official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

These coins were marketed to collectors.

Although they had a face value, it was often difficult or impossible to redeem them unless the precious metal content exceeded the face value of the coins. There is no buy/sell market for these other than that of its precious metal. The Franklin Mint, a private company, doesn't buy them either.

That doesn't mean that these sets can't be sold but when they do, they often sell for far less than the issue price. Some, not all, are artistic enough to attract collectors of medals".

Titaniummynt

Så här skrev Black Mountain Coins i ett nyhetsbrev utskickat i juni 2007 (intressant läsning, för den som är intresserad av vad mynt tillverkas av):

"The first titanium coin was issued by Gibraltar in 1999 as the Millennium Crown.  With a mintage of only 2001 pieces, it quickly sold out at the Mint and has become an NCLT collectible classic. Since then four other titanium coins have been issued, one from Gibraltar and three from the British Virgin Islands. All five coins are available for your viewing pleasure as well as for purchase on our website.
 
The latest titanium coin to be issued is a commemorative crown just released by authority of the British Virgin Islands. It carries a legal tender denomination of Five Dollars and features Benjamin Franklin. With a total mintage worldwide of 7,500 pieces, it is sure to become a favorite of collectors of world coins."

Titanium är en väldigt lätt men extremt hållfast och hård metall - skriver ett par olika websajter. Så nu vet vi det !
